Sports coaching minor

The sports coaching minor is ideal for students who wish to coach, or are currently coaching, youth, club, high school, or college sports. This program provides students with a foundation in coaching theory to help them become positive and effective coaches.

    For sport coaching, students can pursue a minor or certificate option. The sports coaching minor requires two electives and with elective options focusing on athlete development and performance, while the certificate requires one elective with elective options being more coaching focused. Our academic advisor will help you determine which option to pursue after applying.

    For both the coaching minor and certificate, core courses include:

    • KIN 3114: Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries
    • KIN 4641: Training Theory and Analytics for Exercise and Sport Performance
    • KIN 4687: Principles and Theory of Sports Coaching

    Students can view complete course descriptions and requirements through the University's course catalog.

    Students pursuing a sports coaching minor often find themselves coaching different athletic teams. These teams are on various levels, from recreation and youth to professional. 

    All University of Minnesota - Twin Cities students are invited to apply for the minor. To apply, submit the application form. Students will receive notice of their admission 1-2 weeks after applying. Please note if you’re a non-CEHD student the full admission process may take longer due to additional processing.

    Applying by the deadline ensures the program will be on your record at the time of registration. Students are also encouraged to apply after the deadline. Applications submitted after the deadline will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the program is full.
