Sport management minor

Sport management is the business side of the sport industry. It blends the unique aspects of sport with common business, marketing, management, and social and ethical principles. This program is open to all students across the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, preparing students for employment in the sport, entertainment, and fitness industries. 

    This 17 credit program dives into various areas of sport management. This minor requires SMGT 1701: Introduction to Sport Management to be completed or in-progress status as a prerequisite. Once admitted to the minor, the core courses (12 credits) students will take include: 

    • SMGT 3111: Sports Facility and Event Management
    • SMGT 3143: Organization and Management of Sport
    • SMGT 3421: Business of Sport
    • SMGT 3631: Sport Marketing

    In addition to the core courses, students take 3 elective credits. More information elective options and the full course descriptions can be found in the University’s course catalog.

    Sport management provides a diverse range of career options. Related careers students find themselves in may be:

    • General and operational manager
    • Advertising and promotion manager

    Common places students work in include sports teams, sports and recreation organizations, private health clubs, retail businesses, or nonprofits. 

    All University of Minnesota - Twin Cities students are invited to apply for the minor. To apply, submit the application form. Students will receive notice of their admission 1-2 weeks after applying. Please note if you’re a non-CEHD student, the full admission process may take longer due to additional processing.

    Application requirements

    The following conditions are preferred to be met, but all applications are encouraged:

    • In-progress status or a C- or higher in SMGT 1701: Introduction to Sport Management (prerequisite)
    • 45 credits completed
    • 2.75 overall GPA

    Applying by the deadline ensures the minor will be on your record at the time of registration. Students are also encouraged to apply after the deadline. Applications submitted after the deadlines will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the program is full.
