School of Kinesiology faculty and graduate students participate at Northland ACSM Chapter Meeting

The School of Kinesiology had a large presence at the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) 2025 Northland Chpater Meeting. The meeting was held in Mankato, MN from April 3-5, 2025. Many of the School's faculty, labs, and graduate students were involved at the meeting.

Faculty presentations

Don Dengel, PhD, professor in the School of Kinesiology and director of the Laboratory of Integrative Human Physiology (LIHP), and Sarah Greising, PhD, associate professor in the School of Kinesiology and director of the Skeletal Muscle Plasticity and Regeneration Laboratory (SMPRL), gave a talk titled "The Relationship of Muscle to Bone from Animals to Humans."

Daniel Craighead, PhD, assistant professor in the School of Kinesiology and director of the Integrative Cardiovascular and Exercise Physiology Laboratory (ICEPL), and Christopher Lundstrom, PhD, senior lecturer in the School of Kinesiology and director of the Human Sport Performance Laboratory (HSPL), presented a talk titled "Adaptation to High-Volume Endurance Exercise, from Olympian to Mere Mortal." 

Quiz bowl participation

Anton Hesse, PhD, lecturer in the School of Kinesiology, organized a team of undergraduate students to participate in the meeting's quiz bowl event. Students on the quiz bowl team included Katie Dimock, Owen Lindseth, and Lance Liu. 

Graduate student participation

Poster presentations

Many graduate students in the School of Kinesiology presented posters about research they are working on. Poster presentations were given by:

  • Samantha Brooks, titled "Seasonal Changes in Total and Regional Body Composition in Collegiate Football Players by Position" 
  • Tamara de Paula Mancilha, titled "VisceralAdipose Tissue in Obesity: A Comparison Between DXA and MRI Measures"
  • Jack Dooley, titled "Leg Lean Mass and Jump Height in Female Collegiate Volleyball Players"
  • Favian Morales, titled "Objectively Measured Physical Activity and Endothelial Function in Healthy, Recreationally Active Older Adults" 

Scholarships and awards

The School of Kinesiology's graduate students saw success in various scholarships and awards. Samantha Brooks received third place for her poster presentation in the graduate student category. Samantha Brooks and Favian Morales received a Student Scholarship Award that supported their travel to the meeting. 

William Juckett participated in the meeting's President's Cup competition and won with his presentation that highlighted his work, titled "Resting Plasma Lactate and its Relationship with Biomarkers of Metabolic Dysfunction." William will represent the Northland ACSM chapter at the national ACSM meeting in May, where he will compete against student winners from 11 other ACSM chapters.
