LaVoi hosts public scholarship workshop series
A public scholar is an academic or an intellectual who actively engages with the broader public, beyond the confines of academia.

Nicole M. LaVoi, PhD, senior lecturer in the School of Kinesiology and director of the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport, hosted a workshop series on public scholarship for School of Kinesiology faculty. A public scholar is an academic or an intellectual who actively engages with the broader public, beyond the confines of academia. This engagement involves sharing research, expertise, and ideas in accessible ways, often through writing, speaking, and collaborating with non-academic communities. Public scholars aim to make their work relevant and impactful by addressing social, political, cultural, and economic issues that affect the public. They also typically value dialogue and collaboration with diverse audiences.
The workshop series had two parts, where LaVoi shared the opportunities and challenges of public scholarship. The first workshop focused on aspects of engaging in public scholarship, tips for working with the media, and simplifying personal and professional stories. The second workshop covered strategies for building one’s professional brand, engaging with social media, and controlling one’s narrative.
These workshops support the development of School of Kinesiology faculty, creating a bridge between their work and their impact on surrounding communities.
