Inside the sport management BS: Introduction to Sport Management course

The sport management major in the School of Kinesiology prepares students to be successful in the business-side of the sport industry. Students gain exposure to various areas within the field, including roles with professional teams, community sports organizations, and leveraging sports as a tool for social impact.

This hands-on program combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience, creating unique opportunities for those passionate about sports and entertainment. SGMT 1701: Introduction to Sport Management is one of the first classes sport management students take. It provides a holistic base of knowledge for the rest of the major to build off of.

Providing an overview of the sports industry

The Introduction to Sport Management course, taught by Vicki Schull, PhD, introduces students to the diverse career paths available in the evolving world of sports. Students explore various areas of the industry including professional sports, college athletics, youth and community sport, sport agencies, and Esports. Students also develop a strong foundational understanding in key business areas such as:

  • Sport marketing
  • Sport sales
  • Facility and event management
  • Finance
  • Economics
  • Communications
  • Sport analytics

Furthermore, students learn from a wide range of sports industry professionals and work to create their own professional resume.

Enhancing student career development

Introduction to Sport Management includes multiple career development opportunities, giving students an inside look at working in the sports industry. Students participate in a resume workshop to establish a unique “personal brand.” In addition, students conduct an informational interview or shadow a professional within the sports industry. Students may also choose to attend a networking event or job fair to further develop networking skills and gain a competitive edge. This immersive course goes beyond the typical college class, providing students with practical career building and networking experience to further their professional careers.

Making industry connections

Nearly every week, students hear and learn from a variety of sport industry professionals. In the past, students had the opportunity to learn from leaders such as:

By the end of the Introduction to Sport Management course, students will gain the confidence and knowledge to connect with professionals in the sport management field.
