Donald R. Dengel, PhD, professor in the School of Kinesiology and director of the Laboratory of Integrative Human Physiology, is a co-author of an article published in the journal Development and Psychopathology. The article was titled “Post-adoption experiences of discrimination moderate by sleep quality are associated with depressive symptoms in previously institutionalized youth over and above deprivation-induced depression risk." The study examined depressive symptoms, heart rate variability and sleep quality in adolescents and young adults who had been adopted internationally from institutional care when they were infants and very young children. These data were compared to individuals born and raised in families of comparable education and incomes.
