Headshot of Washington

Tyrone Washington, PhD

Date: Friday, March 15
Time: 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Host: Sarah Greising, PhD

What’s happening in the Exercise Muscle Biology Laboratory – Examining sarcopenic obesity and cancer cachexia

Tyrone Washington, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Exercise Science at the University of Arkansas. In his Exercise Muscle Biology Laboratory, they leverage advanced cellular and molecular biology techniques, employing both in vivo and in vitro models to investigate the intricacies of muscle plasticity. The laboratory's primary focus lies in deciphering the signaling pathways within skeletal muscle triggered by the physiological conditions of aging, obesity, sarcopenic obesity, and cancer cachexia. These diverse conditions elicit distinct regulatory effects on gene expression. The ongoing research endeavors in the laboratory aims to yield crucial insights into these signaling mechanisms.

Their ultimate goal is to contribute valuable data that can inform the development of targeted interventions for
individuals grappling with chronic wasting diseases, age-related muscle mass decline, and the muscle dysfunction
associated with sarcopenic obesity. By unraveling the molecular underpinnings of these conditions, they aspire to pave
the way for the formulation of effective countermeasures that address the specific challenges posed by each
pathological state. This research not only advances our fundamental understanding of muscle biology but also holds
the potential to significantly impact clinical strategies for mitigating the consequences of chronic health conditions
affecting skeletal.

Headshot of Sarkar

Developing resilience for sustained success and wellbeing: Research to practice

Mustafa Sarkar, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Sport and Performance Psychology at Nottingham Trent University in the UK. His research addresses the psychology of performance excellence with a particular focus on individual, team, and organizational resilience. As well as publishing research in this area, as a Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol), Dr Sarkar works closely with teams and organizations on creating environments and cultures to develop resilience, including Google, the Premier League, the English Football Association, and various international Olympic Committees.

Headshot of Matheson

Emily Matheson, PhD

A global approach to addressing body confidence in sport: A case study in multi-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder partnerships

Emily Matheson, PhD, is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR), and the Clinical and Project Specialist at EVERYBODY Consulting. In both roles, Emily works closely with community and industry partners to develop, evaluate and launch evidence-based mental health and well-being initiatives. In her research role at CAR, Emily leads global body image projects, with expertise in creating and evaluating interventions for digital and sporting contexts. She is currently the principal investigator on a large-scale, international project that aims to develop positive body image interventions for sport environments, with a specific focus on girl-identifying athletes and their coaches. In her role at EVERYBODY Consulting, Emily helps world leading brands and organizations with their impact journey, by helping them to develop and embed evidence-based mental health and wellbeing practices into their businesses.
