Michael J. Navarre, PhD, is a Teaching Specialist in the School of Kinesiology. With over 25 years as a college soccer coach, instructor, and mental performance consultant, Dr. Navarre brings a unique perspective and experience to the school.

Michael Navarre, Ph.D., is a teaching specialist in the area of social and behavioral sciences in the School of Kinesiology at the University of Minnesota. He received an MA (1999) in Exercise Science specializing in Sport Psychology from the University of North Carolina and a Ph.D. (2011) in Kinesiology with an emphasis in sport psychology/sociology from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Navarre was the Head Men’s and Women’s Soccer Coach at Augsburg University from 1999-2002 and the Head Women’s Soccer Coach and an Instructor in the Department of Physical Education and Exercise Science at Augsburg from 2002-2023. Dr. Navarre achieved unprecedented success leading the Auggie women’s soccer program, guiding the Auggies to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Championships in 2014, 2017, and 2019 and MIAC Playoff Championships in 2014 and 2016. Additionally, the Auggies were MIAC Runner-up in 2012, 2015, 2016, and 2018 and MIAC Playoff Runner-up in 2012, 2018, and 2019. Dr. Navarre earned (MIAC) Coach of the Year honors in 2014 and 2017.
Dr. Navarre retired from Augsburg in 2023 and launched a consulting business: Inside Out Coaching, where he helps coaches, athletes, and business professionals improve their mental and performance and leadership capacity.
Dr. Navarre returned to coaching in 2024 to serve as an assistant coach for the Carleton College women’s soccer program, helping lead the Knights to the 2024 MIAC Championship, the 2025 MIAC Playoff Championship, and the NCAA Tournament 2nd Round in 2024 and the Elite Eight in 2025.
