Inside the sport management BS: Senior seminar course

The sport management major in the School of Kinesiology helps students understand the business-side of the sports industry. To allow students to apply what they've learned throughout their undergraduate career, as well as prepare them for post-graduation life, sport management students take a senior seminar class.

The Senior Seminar in Sport Management course connects sport management research to real world issues. Students complete a semester-long project within teams that solves an organization's business problem. The students work collaboratively with each other and the organization to develop a comprehensive plan that addresses the problem.

Students in the Fall 2024 Senior Seminar class worked with either the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota United Football Club (MNUFC). Students who partnered with the Minnesota Vikings provided solutions to expand girls flag football in time for the 2028 Olympics, while groups working with MNUFC identified strategies to implement a fan loyalty program. All groups gave final presentations at the Vikings Lakes facility in Eagan, MN, with representatives from the Vikings and MNUFC present.

By taking the senior seminar course, students apply their background knowledge on the sport management industry and research skills to tackle an organization's problem. While doing so, students establish meaningful connects with those in the sports industry that may help them in their post-graduate career.
