Craighead awarded grant from the American Heart Association
This clinical trial will determine the best high-resistance inspiratory muscle strength training training program to obtain the biggest health benefits.

Daniel Craighead, PhD, assistant professor in the School of Kinesiology and director of the Integrative Cardiovascular and Exercise Physiology Lab (ICEPL), was awarded a grant from the American Heart Association titled "Optimization of high-resistance inspiratory muscle strength training for lowering blood pressure: a dose-response trial."
This three-year award funds a clinical trial that will test three different doses of high-resistance inspiratory muscle strength training (IMST). IMST is a novel, time-efficient breathing exercise to lower blood pressure and decrease cardiovascular disease risk. IMST takes five minutes to do, where patients use a device to breathe against resistance. This clinical trial will determine the best IMST training program to obtain the biggest health benefits.
